How We Test VPNs

We do not rely on marketing claims or spec sheets. Every VPN in this comparison was tested hands-on over multiple weeks. Here is our methodology:

Speed Testing

We ran speed tests on a 1 Gbps connection across 10 server locations per VPN, testing at peak and off-peak hours. We measured download speed, upload speed, and latency. Results were averaged across 50+ individual tests per provider.

Privacy & Security Audit

We checked for DNS leaks, WebRTC leaks, and IPv6 leaks using our own testing tools. We reviewed each VPN's privacy policy, checked for independent audits, examined the jurisdiction, and verified encryption standards. VPNs that failed any leak test were disqualified.

Streaming & Geo-unblocking

We tested each VPN against Netflix (US, UK, Japan), BBC iPlayer, Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO Max. A VPN gets a streaming checkmark only if it unblocked at least 4 out of 7 services consistently over a 2-week period.

App Quality & Usability

We installed each VPN on Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. We evaluated connection times, interface design, feature accessibility, and whether the kill switch actually works when you force-disconnect the VPN.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which VPN is the fastest in 2026?

NordVPN is the fastest VPN we tested in 2026, averaging 520 Mbps on nearby servers using the NordLynx protocol (based on WireGuard). ExpressVPN's Lightway protocol came in second. Both are fast enough for 4K streaming, gaming, and large downloads without noticeable slowdown.

What is the cheapest VPN worth buying?

Surfshark at $2.19/month on a 2-year plan is the cheapest premium VPN worth buying. It includes unlimited simultaneous connections, a no-logs policy, and reliably unblocks streaming services. For a free option, ProtonVPN's free tier is the only one we recommend.

Is NordVPN better than ExpressVPN?

For most users, yes. NordVPN is faster, cheaper ($3.39/mo vs $6.67/mo), offers more servers (6,400+ vs 3,000+), and includes features ExpressVPN lacks (Double VPN, Tor over VPN, Meshnet). ExpressVPN has slightly more polished apps and a dedicated router product. Both have audited no-logs policies.

Do all VPNs work with Netflix?

No. Netflix actively blocks VPN IP addresses. Only premium VPNs with large server networks and dedicated streaming infrastructure reliably bypass Netflix geo-restrictions. NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Surfshark consistently work with Netflix in our testing. Free VPNs and smaller providers are almost always blocked.
