What Is an IP Address?
An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique numerical label assigned to every device connected to the internet. Think of it as your device's "home address" on the internet - it tells other computers where to send data when you request a webpage, send an email, or stream video.
IPv4 vs IPv6: What's the Difference?
IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4)
The original IP format using 32-bit addresses (e.g., 192.168.1.1). Limited to ~4.3 billion unique addresses, which are now nearly exhausted.
IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6)
The newer 128-bit format (e.g., 2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334). Provides virtually unlimited addresses for the growing internet of things.
Public vs Private IP Addresses
- Public IP: Your unique address on the internet, assigned by your ISP. This is what websites see when you visit them.
- Private IP: Used within your local network (e.g., 192.168.x.x). Your router translates between your private and public IP.
- Static IP: A permanent address that doesn't change - often used by businesses for servers.
- Dynamic IP: Changes periodically, assigned by your ISP. Most home connections use dynamic IPs.
Common Reasons to Check Your IP
- VPN verification: Confirm your VPN is masking your real IP and location
- Troubleshooting: Diagnose network connectivity issues
- Security: Check if your IP has been blacklisted or compromised
- Geo-restrictions: Verify which country your IP appears to be from
- Remote access: Share your IP for remote desktop or gaming connections
IP Address and Privacy
Your IP address can reveal your approximate location (usually city-level), your ISP, and can be used to track your online activity across websites. To protect your privacy, consider using a VPN which masks your real IP with one from their servers. You can test your VPN for leaks to make sure it's working properly.
