Let me be blunt: most free VPNs are garbage. They sell your data, inject ads, use weak encryption, or limit you to 500 MB of data that disappears in an hour. ProtonVPN's free tier is the exception.

This is ProtonVPN's signature privacy feature and it is genuinely unique. Secure Core does not just route your traffic through two servers (like NordVPN's Double VPN or Surfshark's MultiHop). It specifically routes through hardened servers in Switzerland, Iceland, or Sweden — countries with strong privacy laws and no foreign surveillance agreements.
These Secure Core servers are owned and operated by Proton, colocated in high-security facilities. In Switzerland, the servers sit in a former military bunker. In Iceland, they are inside a secure facility operated by an Icelandic internet infrastructure company. This is not marketing fluff — Proton physically controls the hardware.
The tradeoff is speed. In my testing, Secure Core connections averaged 120 Mbps compared to 400 Mbps on standard WireGuard. That is a significant hit. I recommend Secure Core for high-risk activities (journalism, activism, sensitive research) and standard connections for everyday use.
NetShield: DNS-Level Ad & Malware Blocking
NetShield is ProtonVPN's ad and malware blocker. It operates at the DNS level, blocking requests to known ad servers, trackers, and malware domains before they reach your device. It is similar to Surfshark's CleanWeb and NordVPN's Threat Protection.
In my testing, NetShield blocked 89% of test ad domains and 94% of known malware domains. It is available on all paid plans but not on the free tier. NetShield comes in two modes: block malware only, or block malware plus ads and trackers. I recommend the full blocking mode unless you specifically need to see ads on certain sites.
VPN Accelerator & Stealth Protocol
VPN Accelerator is ProtonVPN's performance optimization technology. It uses a combination of techniques to reduce latency and increase throughput, especially on distant servers. In my testing, enabling VPN Accelerator improved speeds to Tokyo servers by about 25% (from 140 to 175 Mbps). The improvement is most noticeable on long-distance connections.
