What Makes Mullvad Different
Let me be direct. Mullvad is not trying to compete with NordVPN, Surfshark, or ExpressVPN. It is not trying to be the fastest, the cheapest, or the most feature-packed. Mullvad is trying to be the most private VPN in the world, and it succeeds.
When you sign up for Mullvad, you do not enter an email address. You do not create a username. You do not set a password. You click “Generate account number” and receive a random 16-digit number. That is your identity. That is all Mullvad knows about you.
You can pay with a credit card, sure. But you can also mail cash in an envelope to their office in Gothenburg, Sweden. Five euros in an envelope with your account number written on a piece of paper. No digital trail. No payment processor. No record of who paid for what.
This is paranoid. This is extreme. And for the people who need it, it is exactly right.

Mullvad averaged 350 Mbps on nearby servers. Decent, but below NordVPN (520 Mbps), ExpressVPN (410 Mbps), ProtonVPN (400 Mbps), and Surfshark (380 Mbps). The smaller server network (800+ vs thousands) means more users per server, which affects peak-time performance. Long-distance connections to Asia and Australia were noticeably slower.

Server Ownership: Not Just Renting
Most VPN providers rent their servers from data center companies. This means a third party physically controls the hardware your traffic flows through. Mullvad takes a different approach: they own and operate servers in key locations.
Not all of Mullvad's 800+ servers are owned. Many are rented, as is the case with every VPN. But the fact that Mullvad physically controls servers in their most critical locations (primarily in Sweden and other Nordic countries) adds a layer of trust that rented infrastructure cannot provide.
In June 2023, Swedish police raided Mullvad's office with a search warrant. They left empty-handed. No customer data was found because Mullvad's systems genuinely do not store any. This is not a claim — it was tested under real legal pressure and held up.
Pricing: Refreshingly Honest
Every other VPN on the market uses the same pricing trick: a massive headline discount on a 2 or 3-year plan, an expensive monthly option to make the long-term plan look better, and various upsells along the way. Mullvad does none of this.

If you compare month-to-month, Mullvad at €5 is actually cheaper than NordVPN ($12.99/month), ExpressVPN ($12.95/month), and Surfshark ($15.45/month). The honest pricing means you always pay the same, and you can leave anytime.
Streaming: Not Mullvad's Strength
I will not sugarcoat this. If you want a VPN for streaming, do not get Mullvad. In my March 2026 testing:

WireGuard Implementation
Mullvad was one of the earliest VPN providers to adopt WireGuard, and their implementation is clean. Unlike NordVPN (which wraps WireGuard in their proprietary NordLynx layer) or ExpressVPN (which built their own Lightway protocol), Mullvad uses standard WireGuard as-is.
The advantage is transparency and auditability. Standard WireGuard is one of the most reviewed VPN protocols in existence, with roughly 4,000 lines of code. There is no proprietary black box layered on top.
Mullvad also supports OpenVPN for users who prefer it, and offers SOCKS5 proxy support. The app is functional but minimal — no flashy maps, no server recommendation algorithms, no usage stats. You pick a server, you connect. That is it.
Tested Under Pressure: The 2023 Police Raid
In June 2023, Swedish police arrived at Mullvad's office in Gothenburg with a search warrant, attempting to seize computers and customer data. This is the nightmare scenario for any VPN provider, and it is the moment where no-log claims are put to the test.
The police left empty-handed. Mullvad's staff explained that they do not store customer data, demonstrated that the servers contain no identifying information, and the authorities ultimately took nothing. Mullvad published a statement about the incident the same day.
This incident matters because it is real-world evidence. Any VPN can claim “no logs.” Mullvad's claim has been tested by law enforcement and held up. That is a level of credibility that marketing budgets cannot buy.

The Verdict: Not for Everyone
Mullvad is not the best VPN for most people. It has fewer servers, slower speeds, no streaming support, only 5 device connections, and a basic app. If you want a VPN that does everything well, get NordVPN. If you want the best value, get Surfshark.
But if you are a journalist, activist, whistleblower, or privacy maximalist who needs a VPN that collects absolutely nothing about you — not your email, not your name, not your payment information — then nothing comes close to Mullvad.
The police raid proved it. The open-source code proves it. The flat, no-tricks pricing proves it. Mullvad is exactly what it claims to be: a VPN built for privacy and nothing else.

Because Mullvad believes the best way to protect your data is to never collect it in the first place. No email means there is no email to leak or subpoena. No username means there is no identity to link. The 16-digit account number is the only thing connecting you to the service, and even that is not linked to any personal information unless you choose to pay by card.
