    Reading an earthquake listing

    Every entry above is one recorded event in the USGS global catalogue. Three numbers do most of the work: how big it was, how deep it started, and how far it was from you.

    Why depth changes everything

    A magnitude 5 that starts 10 km down can shake a town hard. The same magnitude 5 starting 300 km down may barely register at the surface, because the energy spreads through far more rock before it arrives. That is why the listings above show depth in both kilometres and miles rather than hiding it.

    Distance is measured to the epicentre

    The distance shown is the great-circle distance from the location we resolved for you to the epicentre, which is the point on the surface directly above where the rupture began. Because your location here comes from your IP address, it is accurate to the city rather than the street, so treat distances under about 20 km as approximate.

    Was there an earthquake near me just now?+

    The list on this page is the current USGS catalogue for the area around your resolved location, newest first. If the newest entry is minutes old, that is the shake you felt. If the list is empty, nothing above your chosen magnitude has been recorded in that radius during the time window.

    Why does nothing show up for my area?+

    Most of the world is seismically quiet for weeks at a time. Widen the radius, lengthen the time window, or drop the minimum magnitude to All. Detection coverage also varies: small events are catalogued densely in California, Alaska and Japan and more sparsely elsewhere.

    How quickly do earthquakes appear here?+

    USGS publish automatic solutions within a few minutes of an event, then revise them as analysts review the data. We refresh from USGS every few minutes, so a new event normally shows up here within about five minutes of USGS posting it. Entries marked automatic have not been reviewed by a person yet.

    What does the depth number mean?+

    Depth is how far below the surface the rupture started. Shallow earthquakes, roughly the top 70 km, are felt much more strongly at the surface than deep ones of the same magnitude, because less rock absorbs the energy on the way up.

    What magnitude can people actually feel?+

    Around magnitude 2.5 is the rough threshold for being noticed by people close to the epicentre. Magnitude 4.5 rattles windows over a wide area. The scale is logarithmic, so each whole step is about 32 times more energy released.
